Unilever Nigeria Appoints New Chairman, Non-Executive Directors

31/03/2008 : Unilever Nigeria Plc has appointed Apostle Hayford Alile as Chairman, Board of Directors and two others, Mr. Atedo Peterside and Senator Udoma Udo Udoma as Non-executive Directors.

UNILEVER NIGERIA GETS NEW CHAIRMAN

Unilever Nigeria Plc, the oldest and best surviving manufacturing industry in Nigeria, has appointed Apostle Hayford Alile as Chairman, Board of Directors while Mr. Atedo Peterside and Senator Udoma Udo Udoma become Non-executive Directors.

The Corporate Relations Manager, Yemi Adeboye, announced in a statement, that this appointment took effect from 1st of January 2008.

Apostle Hayford Alile replaces Mr. F.A.O. Ohiwerei who stepped down on the 31st December 2007.

According to the statement, Apostle Alile joined the Company's Board in April 2001 and served on the board of many other companies prior to his current appointment.

Apostle Alile was born in Benin-City (now in Edo State) in 1940. He studied at the University of Ibadan, Howard University in Washington, Graduate School of Management at Rutgers University, Public Administration Centre, Kent, England, and Harvard Graduate Business School, Boston, USA.

He won the American National Honours Awards in Mathematics and Economics.

Apostle Alile has worked in various capacities in Nigeria and abroad. Among the positions he has held are Assistant Director, Rutgers University Entrepreneurial Development Centre, Economic and Finance Consultant in Louis Berger Inc East Orange, New Jersey, USA. He was appointed Executive Director of Lagos Stock Exchange (now Nigerian Stock Exchange) in 1976 and was promoted to the position of Director-General of the Exchange in 1979. He retired as Director General in December1999.

Mr. Atedo Peterside (OON), on the other side, is the Founder and Chairman of IBTC Charted Bank Plc. A highly experienced banker, Mr. Peterside has overseen numerous path-breaking financial advisory and capital market assignments undertaken in the Nigerian economy.

Educated at Kings College, Lagos, City University, London, London School of Economics and political Science and Harvard Business School, he holds B.Sc and M.Sc degrees in Economics.

He served as the Chairman of Committee on Corporate Governance of Public Companies in Nigeria. The committee published in year 2003 the Code of Best Practices for Public Companies in Nigeria.

Mr. Peterside, an Honorary Special Adviser to the Executive Governor of Rivers State, also serves on several companies’ Boards as Chairman and or Non Executive Director.

Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, an expert in Company, Securities and Capital Market Documentation and Constitutional Laws, was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1978.

He attended Kings College, Lagos, Oxford University, England, and the Nigerian Law School.

Senator Udoma, a member of International Bar Association, has served variously as Law Lecturer at the University of Lagos, Investment Analyst in Chase Merchant Bank Nigeria Ltd, and Partner at David Garrick & Company, a corporate law firm.

He also served as the First Chairman of Corporate Affairs Commission in 1991, and Chairman of Presidential Committee on Waivers, Incentives and Concessions 2007.

He served for two – terms in the Senate (1999– 2007), and distinguished himself as Chief Whip, Leader of the South-South Caucus and Leader of the National Assembly Debt Relief Campaign Team.
