Health

Our areas of focus are HIV/AIDS and the prevention of blindness. By December 2005, Unilever Nigeria had touched the lives of over 30,000,000 Nigerians through her HIV/AIDS campaigns programmes on radio, ‘Its’ My Life’ and TV, ‘In Moments Like This’. 

The TV programme is broadcast on NTA network which boasts of 30,000,000 viewers. The company has over 80 trained Peer Educators and Counsellors among its employees. These Peer Educators and Counsellors campaign regularly on HIV/AIDS in communities across the country.

The prevention of blindness programme is run through the Trachoma Control Programme in Sokoto state. By December 2005, over 3,500 eye lid surgeries have been performed, and over 50,000 patients treated with antibiotics, while over 300,000 people were reached on radio with blindness prevention campaign. This partnership was initiated in 2003.

Education

Unilever Nigeria sponsored two Nigerian Professors to the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Molecular Informatics. The professors have cascaded the knowledge gained from the visit to thousands of Nigerian university students over the years thereby pushing forward the frontiers of scientific knowledge in Nigeria.

Unilever Nigeria also sponsors the Unilever International Schools Art Project in Nigeria for primary and secondary schools pupils/students. This project exposes young artists from Nigeria to international standards and prepares them for future challenges.

On a regular basis, pupils, students, members of professional bodies visit our factories and offices across the country for educational purposes.

Hand washing demonstrationHygiene

Unilever Nigeria covers the country through its collaboration with UNICEF in our Schools Hand Wash Campaign. This campaign (2005 – 2007) will touch one million school pupils and through them 5 others persons per family. We therefore aim to reach 6million people via this campaign. 

Good hygiene habit leading to improved state of health/wellbeing for the people is the core message of this campaign. To drive the hygiene campaign further, Unilever has in collaboration with WaterAid also provided, by December 2005, about 2000 latrines for communities in Bauchi and Plateau states.  

Water

Unilever Nigeria is involved in the provision of potable water, and water advocacy campaign to various communities in Nigeria. The areas of focus are Abia, Bauchi, Ogun and Plateau states. About a hundred wells and 25 boreholes have been provided and over 250,000 people have been touched through this programme.

Oral CareBrand initiatives

The current stream of Nutrition and Dental Health Campaign (2004 – 2008) targets 2million households. By December 2005 about 3,870 schools, 32,980 teachers and 956,652 pupils had been reached. The campaign includes the donation of modern dental equipment to a rural dental clinic and support to the Dental Association of Nigeria and Nigerian Association of Dental Students.

Donations & sponsorships

Unilever Nigeria has a track record of giving to deserving causes. Over the years the company has made donations (cash /products) to UNICEF Walk for Children, schools, Network of People Living With HIV/AIDS across the country, motherless babies homes, victims of disasters etc.

Going Forward

UCAP, being a holistic approach to our broad role in the Nigerian society, will become more important as we move into the future. Unilever Nigeria will ensure that our presence is felt through both our brands and our involvement in the community.
