The Campaign against HIV/AIDS and prevention of blindness are our priorities in this area.

Certificate for Workplace HIV/AIDS Best Practices Award 2004Campaign against HIV/AIDS

Our objective on HIV/AIDS is to educate the people, raise awareness levels and ultimately prevent the spread of the disease. In 2005, Unilever Nigeria in a concerted effort to stop this scourge in the country, in collaboration with Positive Action for Treatment Access (PATA) and National Action Committee on AIDS (NACA) sponsored a TV Programme on HIV/AIDS.

The magazine programme – In Moments like this - is geared towards enlightenment, education and attitude change of viewers. Viewers’ Survey revealed that the programme is the second most popular health education programme on television in Nigeria especially among youths.

We also have a vibrant workplace programme focused on education, awareness and prevention. Our current thrust in this area is Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) and we practise a policy of non-discrimination and non-stigmatisation.

Prevention of blindness

In the all important area of sight, Unilever Nigeria, in collaboration with Sight Savers International (SSI) and Sokoto State Ministry of Health contributes to the prevention of blindness and restoration of sight through our Trachoma Control/Prevention of Blindness Programme in Sokoto State.

In 2005, One thousand Nine Hundred and Two (1,902) Eye Lid Surgeries were performed. 50,000 people were also treated with antibiotics to arrest various stages of Trachoma infections, while 300,000 benefited from the media campaign on Trachoma Control and Prevention. Considering the vital role that sight plays in people’s lives this is a veritable way of adding Vitality to life.
